FAQ

Filament winding and fiber placement, explained

Short answers to the questions we are asked most often before a line is specified.

What is a Type IV pressure vessel?

A fully composite tank: a polymer liner over-wrapped with carbon fiber by filament winding, with no metal shell. Type IV vessels store hydrogen and CNG at 350 to 700 bar at a fraction of the weight of steel, which is why they are used in fuel-cell vehicles, gas transport and launch vehicles. Mikrosam multi-spindle winders produce them in volume.

What is the difference between AFP and ATL?

Automated fiber placement (AFP) lays narrow tows, typically ¼ inch wide, individually steered over complex curvature. Automated tape laying (ATL) lays wide prepreg tape, 50 to 300 mm on Mikrosam lines, on flat or gently curved surfaces at higher rates. Mikrosam Libra and Taurus lines do both with an automatic head exchange.

Which filament winding machine suits my part?

Lab machines for R&D and smaller parts, up to 1 m in diameter and 3 m long; floor-bed machines for large mandrels, up to 4 m in diameter and 30 m long; multi-spindle machines for the volume production of pressure vessels, with two to five spindles winding at once. Send us the part diameter, length and annual volume and we will propose the configuration.

Who installs and supports Mikrosam lines in India?

ABS India, Mikrosam’s authorised distributor, does it from Bengaluru: installation and commissioning, operator and programming training, calibration, maintenance contracts and spare parts. The factory-trained engineers who install your line also answer your service calls and keep its history, so the people who know it best look after it for as long as you run it.
